Why can't i stay awake?

I go to bed, i sleep, i wake up.

Then i wake up again and again and again and again trying to do whatever it is i'm doing.

It's like i have some sort of fucking narcolepsy.

But i go to bed and i can't fucking sleep. I cannot actually be comfortable in bed for more than two hours. After that i HAVE to get up. I cannot be lying down any more.

It's pissing me off because it's stopping me do things i want to get done. If i sit in front of the PC to do some work or play a game or even just browse fucking livejournal i constantly wake up to find i've been clicking random things. I DON'T EVEN RECALL FALLING ASLEEP. The first thing i know about it is i wake myself up because the keyboard / table is hurting my head or my arm has twitched and my mouse has been flung off the table.

This has been going on for MONTHS.

I am literally losing chunks of time and it's fucking me off.

Time to bust your cycle. Change your routine, do something different, etc.

I am not a doctor... but...
Here are the questions a doctor will ask:-
Firstly, we need to work out if it's psychological or physiological.
Does it get better with activity or worse? Does it get better with rest or worse? If it gets better with activity and worse with rest, then it is probably psychological, the inverse implies physiological.

First off, I'd examine your pulse. Check for shortness of breath. Anaemia is a very common cause for fatigue, and a fast pulse, pale skin and shortness of breath are the most obvious symptoms.

Diet is the next thing to check, iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies present as a chronic fatigue, as does mere malnutrition (did you forget to eat?) a blood check for iron-anaemia takes just a couple of minutes.

They'd probably want to take a full alcohol & drug history, in case anything you're on or have taken would have fatigue as a side effect.

Carbon monoxide poisoning might be a care, so they'd check you've got a detector and if anyone you live with is experiencing similar symptoms? Try opening the windows etc. and see if you feel better.

Any unrelated symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea? blurred vision? These would suggest something more severe and in need of immediate attention.

A physical examination of the glands beneath the jaw and along the neck would also probably be a good idea after all you could just have a dose of the flu. Which would suck but also make you knackered.

If it's psychological, then chronic depression is the most likely cause. Fatigue accompanies depression in almost all cases. In which case the usual treatments for depression are your first order of business.

It's probably not lupus ^_^

For a while I had a similar problem where I would come home and fall asleep until I was late for work the following day. It turned out that I was lactose intolerant, and that milk has a super-soporific effect on me.

Theeighth covered quite a bit, but I'd like to suggest having a good chat with a gyno as well. Female hormones are almost always in flux but as we mature they can occasionally take a trip to wonkyville without our permission. Sounds trite but just a tad too much testosterone in the mix can have you sprouting hair in odd places and punching strangers for no reason. If your thyroid is affected by too much estrogen which affects your T2 and T3 levels you can become tired, exhibit symptoms of depression, lose your hair and a host of other fun things.

Also, have you tried changing your pillow? Not because of cleanliness issues but because your comfort needs may have changed. A good example is that for me a standard pillow is good for things other than sleeping. I use either a contoured pillow with more neck support or a neck roll. The lack of either of these pillows means I won't sleep well which can set off insomnia for days.

Work and play in bed and put a pillow on your keyboard... Who said one had to sleep in bed anyway :-)... But first try solutions A, B and C in the comments... Solution E : come to Paris! smile
