Music Taste Evolution

I seem to be rediscovering Trance - if this is a good thing or not i'll let you know.

That said Paul Maddox & DJGRH are about to bless my ears with New York New York - You will know it as the first track on Tidy vs Frantic

The one single track that led to this rediscovering of all things Trancy was Apoptygma Berzerk's Kathy's Song (come lie with me) - What a truely great track that is.

Trance nothing. :p
Tiesto and Marco V have been pumping out quality trance for a while now. ^_^

Even more shockingly, I've been getting back into hiphop. :p Scary. :p

Hmmmm...

Over the last four years or so, I've periodically dipped into samplers and stuff just to see what people like Tiesto, Picotto et al are up, since the music press seems to keep touting them as hard trance, but frankly I find it all a bit wishy-washy and gutless...

I prefer the stuff released by Tinrib, Mohawk and DJs like Weirdo, Chris C, *Ting*, Karim, The Stimulan DJs and similar...a lot darker and harderfaster

A matter of taste,I guess, but the bigname poptrance stuff doesn't seem to have progressed since about '98/'99

I wouldn't call them hard trance, but then again, I wouldn't listen to what the music press say either. :p

It's not "hard trance" they're producing, it's more electro inspired than anything. You can't fairly compare it to the wave of cheesy euro trance we've been getting washing up on our shores since ATB thought he could make music.

It's put together intelligently, it's well created, well executed and above all, it's not trance-by-numbers. At the same time, it's not going to get your adrenaline rushing like The Stimulant DJs will. But then again, I like prog house as well as the harder end of the spectrum, so... Meh.

If it was a choice between Picotto and something like *spits* Ian van Dahl, which would you pick? :p

No...so that's why I keep ending up with a whole slew of crap sampler CDs that...despite being mixed by bigname, bigroom DJs...are, as I think I said, crap

That reminds me...At work we appear to have a table where you can put unwanted books and then other people can buy them for a quid each...I believe the money goes to a local children's charity...

I must take along a few of the old magazine covermounted samplers that I've picked up over the years..especially Ministry's Mauro Picotto: Italian Techno Meister (which is neither techno, nor a meisterwerk, but actually shite)...and Cannabis Cafe (which didn't so much mong me out, as make me go out...to find some decent music)...and Mixmag's Are you tribal? (No and neither is this!...Honestly, tribal used to mean bangin', whereas this is for people who find even garage too fast and intellectually challenging!)

I dumped a few on a friend who hadn't heard them...(I did warn him they were shite...but he sometimes likes shite, so he agreed that he might want to listen to them himself first)...on the understanding that he was never again to mention them to me, or bring them back...One of them was called 3am Rushhour or something...My response was that if this was a 3am rushhour set, you'd better hope you been stiffed with a shit pill previously...or the night was gonna be even more disappointing...

I think he later agreed with me that they were shite and gave them to his nextdoor neighbour, who apparently liked them!

>it's not trance-by-numbers.

Hmmmm...Well, I dunno...for me it all sounds like a poor attempt to remake early '90s trance (in other words, ambient) with a stripped down d'n'b/garage sensibility...like early '90s trance could be any more stripped down...So effectively it seems to me to be trance-by-numbers...simply copying previous styles and approaches slavishly

>At the same time, it's not going to get your adrenaline rushing like The Stimulant DJs will. But then again, I like prog house as well as the harder end of the spectrum, so... Meh.

But it has little or no decent rhythmmic complexity, melodic proression or structural development...So it's not prog either...

Ummmm...Pablo Gargano?

Re: if this is a good thing or not i'll let you know
Of course this is a good thing, as long as it is hard trance, indistinguishable from a multitude of tracks that could be defined as "hard trance", "hardhouse", "hard NRG", "hard dance", "hard acid techno", etc. *

I refer you to the "Music" entry in my LJ bio
